Should the Tigers make a play for Cordero?

10.30.2008

Chad Cordero has become a free agent. He was outrighted by the Nationals to AAA today and elected for free agency.

Cordero could be a huge asset to the Tigers bullpen next year. He is coming off arm surgery in July, but is hoping to be ready for spring training. Why not take a shot? The choice to jump in on the Cordero pool seems more likely if the Tigers can clear some cap room.

Cordero is only 26, and in his three previous years before 2008 he shined. In 2005 he was borderline dominant with a 1.82 ERA and 47 saves in 54 opportunities.

Of all the overpriced free agents floating around this year, Cordero makes sense. He is a classic low-risk, high reward. I, personally, would live to see him closing games for us in 2009.

I think your right on with this one. I was hoping the Tigers would take a Flyer on Octavio Dotel last winter but it didnt happen. Cordero is a low risk investment.

but what kind of draft picks do we lose if we get him?

That all depends on his free agent status. Because of his injury last year, it is very doubtful he will be an A. In fact, I dont even feel he will be a B. If he retains no status, then we lose no picks.
